Bandon Trails is located in Oregon on the west coast of the United States and is part of the Bandon Dunes golf. The Trails Course is located inland in the dunes and forest unlike the other courses that are mainly located by the sea. See my experience playing Bandon Dunes, Bandon Pacific and Old MacDonald.
Hole 1
The first hole is a par 4 measuring 326 meters from the green tees. The green is protected by dunes so you lay up to a good distance for the approach shot.
I hit my rescue and hit the fairway. I missed my approach shot short of the green and made a bogey
HOLE 2
The 2nd hole is a downhill par 3 playing 152m. A nice looking hole from the tee. I missed my tee shot into the right hand bunker and was plugged. Another bogey on the card.
HOLE 3
The third hole is a par 5 measuring 486 meters. The fairway is wide with a bunkers placed well in the middle and left hand side of the fairway. I hit a good drive and was in the fairway with a shot to the green. I missed my approach shot left of the green in the trees. Had to take a drop but managed to get up and down for a par.
HOLE 4
The 4th hole at Bandon Trails is a good par 4 measuring 332 meters. It has a large ridge in the middle of the fairway and ideally you want to cover the left hand side to get the best approach shot to the green. My tee shot was too far to the right and left me with a blind approach shot to the green. Luckily the hole is not that long so it was a short approach shot that ended up on the green and set me up for a par.
HOLE 5
The 5th hole is a great par 3 playing 113m. A nice looking hole from the tee and with different levels to the green. As you can tell from the picture you really do want to avoid the bunkers, bushes and rough around the green. I hit a wedge to the green and was happy with my par.
HOLE 6
Bandon Trails hole 6 is a par 4. It has a slope running left of the fairway bunker and you can play both sides of the bunker. I hit the fairway from the tee but found the bunker on the approach shot.
HOLE 7
Hole 7 is a par 4. It has an uphill slope to the green and a wide fairway. I played the hole well and made my first birdie of the day.
HOLE 8
The 8th hole is a reachable par 4 playing 271m. There is not a lot of room for error on the tee shot but I tried to go for the green. I missed my drive into the right hand bunker but made par from there.
HOLE 9
Hole 9 is a really good par 5. The views of the hole is straight forward and it has a generous fairway. I made birdie after hitting the fairway from tee, good approach shot and a fantastic putt.
BACK NINE ON BANDON TRAILS
HOLE 10
The 10th hole is a par 4 playing 359m. The tee shot is straight forward and preferably keeping it closest to the left hand side for the shortest approach. The green is protected by bunkers on the right hand side and they come more into play if your tee shot is more to the right.
I managed to hit the fairway but missed the green on the approach shot. A good up and down for a par.
HOLE 11
The 11th is a really par 4 playing 392m. The safe play is to the left hand side that leaves a long second shot to the green. There is water running behind the green but plenty of space on the left. I did not play this hole very well. Missed my tee shot to the left and had to take a drop from the trees on my third. All in all resulting in a bad double bogey.
HOLE 13
A short par 4 with an uphill approach shot. Plenty of trouble if you miss the green to either side as you can see from the pictures.
HOLE 14 - nice views and a great par 4
The 14th was one of my favourite holes on the course. An elevated tee box to a short par 4 where the green can be reached with a good tee shot. The green is narrow and with plenty of run off to the right hand side leaving a difficult approach to the green. I tried to go for the green and aimed left to avoid the run off area, but ended up in the trees. Had to take a penalty and made double bogey. I really good hole but obviously a disappointing score.
HOLE 15
The 15th is another good par 4 with a well protected green. I missed the green and had to take a penalty resulting in a bogey.
HOLE 16
The 15th is a strong par 5 uphill all the way to the green.
HOLE 17
The 17th is another good par 3 playing 149m. There are several levels and run off areas to the green that puts pressure on hitting a good tee shot.
HOLE 18
The 18th has a blind tee shot and is uphill towards the clubhouse. I hit driver and made a good par to finish the round.
MY EXPERIENCE
Bandon Trails is a really good golf course and a great addition to the other Bandon Dunes courses. The layout of course within the dunes and forest makes for some really good golf holes. I played this as my last course on the trip and it was a great contrast to finish with. The condition was really good. I was happy with my front nine 37 but a disappointing back nine 44. I hit 71% of the fairways but missed way too many greens. Overall a course that should definitely be part of a Bandon Dunes visit.
