Waterville golf links, Ireland

Waterville golf links is located on the west coast of Ireland and ranked amongst the best. This was a course I was really looking forward to playing and we had good weather conditions with some wind but no rain. We had played 18 holes in the morning on Dooks and arrived for lunch at Waterville where we enjoyed a good meal before heading out.

difficult par 3 at waterville golf links

Hole 12, Par 3, 164 yards

The 12th is a difficult par 3. Only playing 164 yards, but requires a precise tee shot. You can not leave it short as you can see from below picture.
A look back down 12th

12th hole raised green, avoid being short.

gimmie eagle on 11th hole at waterville golf links

Tee shot on par 5 11th

A 477 yards dogleg left to right par 5. It is a blind tee shot if you hit driver as it runs downhill. I hit a good drive at was left with a 6 iron to the green.
Approach to 11th hole

I hit a fantastic approach shot to a gimmie eagle. Not often that happens…
Hole 17, Par 3, 168 yards

strong finishing hole

Hole 18, Par 5, 556 yards

I really like courses with a strong finishing hole and this is one of them. A long par 5 that requires 3 good shots to get on the green. I almost managed, but was just of the green on my third and couldn’t get up and down. A bogey finish.

my experience

I didn’t think the course reached my expectations. There are some really good holes, but too many average holes that doesn’t make for a truly great course. The condition was also average and greens running a bit slow.
I shot an 84 which should have been around 80 in the conditions we had.  Too many double bogeys on the card. Anyway, the eagle made up for a lot of the other poor golf.
