St George’s Hill, UK

St. George’s Hill (1913)

St. George’s Hill is located within the M25 and a gated community with enjoys some fabulous houses as you can see from the pictures below. We played the course in May 2016 and the weather was reasonable. We only planned to play the Blue & Red holes but came a back early and was encouraged to play the green as a warmup. The green was good and can be recommended as warmup to the other 2 flights of 9 holes.

Hole 1, Par 4, 351m
Hole 1, Par 4, 351m

1st hole on the Red course, par 4 uphill.  My drive found the fairway, but I found the bunker to right of the green on my second shot. Hit a mediocre shot on to the green and holed out a great putt for par.

Hole 2, Par 4, 403m
Hole 2, Par 4, 403m

2nd hole a long par 4 with a blind tee shot. Slightly downhill on drive and second shot. I hit a good drive down the fairway and long iron to the green. Converted my putt to a birdie, nice start.

Hole 4, Par4, 239m

4th hole par 4 slightly down hill to a well protected green. A real risk/reward hole and of course I had to try and go for it. Went with a 4 wood and came up short – should have taken the driver. 2nd shot from one bunker to another, but managed to get up and down for a par.

Hole 5, Par 4, 347m
Hole 5, Par 4, 347m

5th par 4 approach shot. I hit the fairway, but missed the green and made bogey.

Hole 7, Par 5, 416m
Hole 7, Par 5, 416m

7th a par 5 which is relatively short, so a good drive should give you the opportunity to reach the green in 2 shots. I came up just short and unfortunately didn’t chip it close, so had to settle for a par.

Hole 8, Par 3, 158m
Hole 8, Par 3, 158m

Par 3 8th which is a really nice hole. Looking down on the green from the tee. I hit a 6 iron a missed the green. Didn’t manage to get up and down, so another bogey.

Hole 9, Par 4, 344m
Hole 9, Par 4, 344m

Par 4 9th hole with a view of the clubhouse in the distance. Second shot is played uphill. I hit the drive in the fairway and hit a good second shot to a green that slopes downhill towards to the fairway. Hit an really good putt which went in for birdie. Front 9 in 39 shots and 4 over par, which I was pleased with – especially with a triple bogey on the card.

Hole 10, Par 4, 394m
Hole 10, Par 4, 394m

Green on the 10th (1st on blue course) a blind tee shot to  a long par 4. Hit my drive slightly right and was obstructed by a tree that meant I couldn’t get on the green. Made bogey.

Hole 11, Par 3, 97m
Hole 11, Par 3, 97m

Par 3 11th a very short hole where you need to be precise. The pin was placed just over the front bunker and I hit my shot to the left, but manage to hole a long putt for birdie.

Hole 12, Par 4, 307m
Hole 12, Par 4, 307m

Approach to par 4 12th where you obviously don’t want to go either long or right. I went long a had a difficult chip. Walked off with a double bogey after a reasonable drive down the left hand side.

Hole 13, Par 4, 381m
Hole 13, Par 4, 381m

Long par 4 13th approach shot. My drive was okay, just in the right hand rough. Didn’t hit a good second shot and made bogey.

Hole 14, Par 3, 178m
Hole 14, Par 3, 178m

Par 3 14th which is another beautiful hole. The pin was placed right hand side as you can see from the picture. There is a slope from left to right in the middle of the green so preferably aim just left of the pin. My golf buddy and I hit 2 really good tee shots that was on the right plateau, but didn’t convert for birdie. However I would take par any day on the hole with the pin placement.

Hole 15, Par 5, 484m
Hole 15, Par 5, 484m

15th a long par 5. Hit a good drive, but a really bad lay up second shot in the bunker. Resulted in a bogey.

Par 4 16th approach.

Hole 17, Par 4, 375m
Hole 17, Par 4, 375m

Par 4 17th which needs an accurate drive. I didn’t manage and visited the trees on the left and a double bogey 6. Really poor tee shot.

Hole 18, Par 4, 331m
Hole 18, Par 4, 331m

Uphill approach to the par 4 18th where I thought a hit a perfect wedge. It went over the green and into the bunker to finish up with a bogey.

The course was really good and well maintained. A hilly course with some blind tee shots and second shots. It was a bit of a rollercoaster game for me and I was happy with my first 11 holes and thereafter it was unpredictable golf with too many loose shots and a round of 82, which should have been mid to late 70’s. Anyway, will be back and try again some day…
